Spaying and Neutering

Why to Spay or Neuter Your Pet

This is meant to be an overview on the benefits of spaying or neutering your pet.  The actual description of the products are as follows:

  • Spay or neuter can be defined as an anesthetic procedure that will surgically remove your pet's reproductive organs.

This brings us to the question of, "Is spaying or neutering the right decision for you and your pet"?  If you have decided that you are willing to make the commitment of bringing puppies or kittens into this world, then this procedure is not for your pet.  Make sure you do your homework before starting the breeding process, as there is a lot to know about breeding and care of new puppies or kittens.

If on the other hand you would like to know the benefits of this procedure please continue to read onward.  The following is a list of benefits to having your pet spayed or neutered:

  • The procedure helps your pet live a longer and healthier life.
  • Reduces the incidents of health problems later on in your pet's life.
  • Eliminates ovarian cancer and reduces the risk of breast cancer when your pet is spayed prior to her first heat cycle.
  • Neutering eliminates testicular cancer and decreases the chances of prostate disease later on in life.
  • Pets that are not neutered or spayed tend to exhibit more aggressive behaviors as they become older.
  • Helps keep your pet from straying or wandering.
  • Helps keep your pet from spraying or marking.
  • Cuts down on the overpopulation of unwanted pets in the world.

The optimum time to have these procedures performed would be at around 4 to 5 months of age.  If you have any questions, or would like to know about one of these procedures, feel free to discuss it with one of our veterinarians or technicians.
